Singapore MRT:

The Singapore MRT (Mass Rapid Transit) is a fast transportation system that forms the backbone of the railway system in Singapore, straddling the entire city state. The first section of the Singapore MRT, between Yio Chu Kang Station and Toa Payoh Station, opened in 1987 establishing itself as the second oldest metro system in Southeast Asia, after Manila LRT System. The system of this Singapore MRT has since developed rapidly as a result of Singapore plan of developing a complete rail network. This Singapore MRT is the major backbone of the public transport system in Singapore with a standard daily rider ship of 1.564 million in FY07/08.

The Singapore MRT has 70 stations with 118.9 kilometers of lines and operates on typical gauge. The rail lines of this Singapore MRT have been constructed by the Land Transport Authority, a department of the government of Singapore. This department of Singapore MRT allocates working concessions to the revenue based corporations SMRT Corporation and SBS Transit. These operators of the Singapore MRT also run bus and taxi services, thus ensuring that there is a full incorporation of public transport services. The Singapore MRT is complemented by the local Light Rail Transit (LRT) systems that tie Singapore MRT stations with HDB public housing estates. Services in this Singapore MRT operate from about 5:30 am and typically end before 1 a.m. daily with frequencies of around three to eight minutes, and services extensive during festive periods.

So far, all built stations of Singapore MRT are in process except Woodleigh Station. Since 1987, the Land Transport Authority has been expanding the Singapore MRT system in order to attach every neighborhood /region in Singapore. The North South Line, East West Line, North East Line and part of the Circle Line are operational while the Downtown Line and the Circle Line are still under construction.
